FIDO IN THE METRO: GUIDELINES AND TIPS

The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) now allows leashed dogs in the metro.

In response to the “Fido in the Metro” campaign launched by the Montreal SPCA in 2021, a pilot project was launched in 2022, much to the relief of families living with dogs in Montreal. The campaign garnered nearly 18,000 signatures. Our mobilization paid off!

Many large cities around the world, including Paris, London, Berlin, Barcelona, San Francisco, and in Canada, Calgary and Toronto, allow dogs to travel on their public transit systems. Montreal is taking an important step by giving dogs access to the metro.

— No special ticket is required; dogs travel free of charge.

— For the time being, dogs are only allowed in the metro. Leashed dogs are therefore not allowed on buses.

— You will still be able to travel on the STM network with your animal in a travel carrier or a bag intended for this purpose, in accordance with existing terms and conditions.

To ensure that travelling with your dog is a pleasant experience for everyone, the Montreal SPCA has drawn up a list of useful tips. The most important step is to prepare your dog for these unfamiliar outings, to make sure all goes well. This may take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Also, be sure to read the STM’s guidelines.

How do you get you prep your dog to take the metro? Here are our tips.

Assess whether your dog is socialized enough to ride the metro
Use your dog’s favourite treats
Understand your dog’s language
Choose a basket muzzle
Getting your dog comfortable wearing a muzzle
Strangers and other dogs
First time in the metro
Head down to the platform
Boarding the train
Gradually extending trips

These are the STM’s mandatory instructions.

For details, visit the STM’s website.

— Dogs may only travel during off-peak hours on weekdays; they may travel at all times on weekends and public holidays.

— Dogs must wear a muzzle throughout the trip, from the moment they enter the metro station until they leave.

— Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times (maximum 1.25 m of slack between your hand and the dog).

— Any messes that the animal might make must be picked up.

— Dogs are not allowed on any seats on the metro trains or benches on the platforms.

— No more than one dog may accompany each person.

— Avoid the front car of the train, which is used by schools, daycares, persons with functional limitations and persons with bicycles.

— Use the stairs (avoid escalators, as they can cause injury to dogs). Elevators are intended for people with limited mobility, but you may use them with your animal if space permits.

— Only use STM-owned entrances and exits.

— Non-STM buildings, businesses and services that provide access to the metro may not allow leashed dogs; inquire prior to your trip.

— Dogs are not allowed in the Longueuil–Université-de-Sherbrooke station.
