Montreal, February 8, 2016 – February 12th 2016, is the Canadian Fur Free Friday, a National day dedicated to encourage consumers to go fur-free and to remind the public of the inherent cruelty associated with wearing or buying fur. In honor of this day, and with Valentine’s Day just around the corner, the Montreal SPCA is holding an event to encourage people to go fur-free and to promote our Make Fur History campaign.
This Friday the 12th and Saturday the 13th, we are inviting the public to join us again at the Montreal SPCA to learn about our efforts to protect fur-bearing animals, receive free informational material to spread the word about our #makefurhistory campaign and take the pledge to go fur-free.
We have the pleasure of welcoming special guests on February 13th: World Champion in pair skating and Olympic medalist Meagan Duhamel, radio host and former hockey player Georges Laraque, and author Élise Desaulniers, who will give a brief presentation on issues related to the fur industry around 4:00pm.
By taking the #makefurhistory fur-free pledge at the Montreal SPCA, you will be eligible to win a vegan and cruelty-free coat, offered by the company Save the Duck. The draw will take place at the Montreal SPCA on Saturday February 13th at 5pm. If you happen to own fur [1], you can also ditch it by dropping it off at the Montreal SPCA, and in exchange for your fur item, you will receive a vegan cupcake from the Petit Lapin Bakery [2]. As well, our Make Fur History pins ($2) and t-shirts ($20) will be also available for sale.

About the #MakeFurHistory campaign
The #MakeFurHistory campaign was started by the Montreal SPCA and The Association for the Protection of Fur-Bearing Animals (APFA) with the support of LUSH Cosmetics. #MakeFurHistory is aimed at raising awareness for consumers and the general public, as well as encouraging governments to get further involved in regulating the commercial fur trade. “Animals raised on fur farms are not afforded adequate legal protection – both the law and the fur industry treat them as commodities,” says Alanna Devine Director of Animal Advocacy at the Montreal SPCA. “Given that the use of fur in fashion, particularly in the form of fur trim, is on the rise, there has never been a better time to make the public aware of the inherent suffering of animals on fur-farms right here in Canada. We want to let the public know they can help stop the suffering of these animals by saying no to fur and working with us to let the Canadian government, retailers and manufacturers know that there is no need to cause this type of suffering in order to produce an unnecessary luxury item.”
