CSPCA Responds to Shocking Footage at Quebec Horse-Slaughter Facility

Montreal, December 14th 2011 – Last week undercover video footage and photographs taken at the horse slaughter plant Les Viandes de la Petite-Nation Inc. in St. Andre-Avellin, Quebec, were released by the Canadian Horse Defence Coalition (CHDC): http://www.defendhorsescanada.org/lpn.html.

After reviewing this evidence, the Canadian Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (CSPCA) is calling for a prohibition on the slaughter of horses in Canada as well as a ban on the import and export of live horses for the purposes of slaughter. “The undercover investigation inside this Quebec slaughterhouse reveals serious animal welfare and food safety concerns”, said Alanna Devine, CSPCA Director of Animal Advocacy.

“The CSPCA is joining the CHDC, thousands of Canadian citizens and numerous other animal welfare organizations in calling upon the Canadian government to adopt Private Member’s Bill C-322 which would end the practice of horse slaughter in Canada and prohibit Canadian horses to be sent to slaughter” said Devine.
