Saint-Édouard-de-Maskinongé, August 8, 2019 – Yesterday, Montreal SPCA animal protection officers, in collaboration with experts from Humane Society International (HSI), evacuated the remaining animals still remaining on site at the St-Edouard Zoo. A seizure led by the SPCA has been underway at the Zoo since May 21st, following the filing of animal cruelty and neglect charges against owner Normand Trahan.
The removal of animals was suspended shortly after the beginning of the seizure, while a first challenge was heard at the Trois-Rivières courthouse. Transport resumed on June 19th, when a favorable decision was issued.
In total, more than 240 animals have been relocated under close veterinary supervision and are now in new, qualified care facilities, where they are receiving all the specialized care they need.
As for zoo owner Normand Trahan, he will return to court on August 16th as the judicial proceedings continue.
