And despite the Prime Minister issuing a mandate in December 2021 calling on the federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food at the time to ban this practice, horses continue to be flown to their death.
Progress was finally made, when, in 2023, Bill C-355, the Prohibition of the Export of Horses by Air for Slaughter Act, was introduced in the House of Commons and was passed by a majority of federal MPs in May 2024! However, since then, Bill C-355 has been stalled in the Senate. And unless the Senate moves forward with its study soon, there is a real risk that this bill will not pass before the next federal election.
