The 3-3-3 Rule for Adjusting to a New Home

Animals, like humans, experience strong emotions during major changes, such as settling into a new home.

This is all the truer if they went through tough times before arriving at the shelter. You can make transitions smoother for everyone by following the 3-3-3 Rule.

3 days – 3 weeks – 3 months

3 days: During the first few days in a new environment, your animal may be disoriented, nervous, fearful or overexcited. Let them come to you and explore their new surroundings at their own pace. Give them a calm environment and, above all, don’t jump to conclusions about your new companion’s personality, as they’re not really “themselves” yet.

3 weeks: During this period, your friend will gradually reveal their personality and realize that they are safe in their new home. This is the time to establish a routine and gently begin socialization and training, all the while being attentive to their body language, reactions and needs. This will build trust with them.

The golden rule: ignore unwanted behaviour and reward desired behaviour.

If things aren’t falling into place after three weeks, you can call in a behavioural specialist to work on certain aspects. Ask for help now, when your animal is more likely to change their habits, rather than after several months or years.

3 months: This is how long it’ll take your animal to adapt well, but this phase may be longer for cats, rabbits and other animals who have a nervous nature. Continue with the training and you’ll discover your animal’s unique personality. Keep up your routine, have a positive attitude and offer them physical and mental activities every day.

Congratulations on welcoming a new family member!

Every animal is unique and grows and changes in their own way. Over the years, some become more affectionate, more fearful or more adventurous, for example. Be attentive to your furry friend’s changing needs over time. They’ll never cease to surprise and amaze you!
