Investigations Division and Cheval Québec to partner against animal cruelty

The Montreal SPCA is proud to announce a new partnership that will benefit horses in Quebec!

The SPCA’s Investigations Division will now be working closely with Cheval Québec, the umbrella organization for equestrian events and competitions held in the province. This collaboration aims to centralize complaints and reports with a view to ensuring rigorous follow-up and increasing the effectiveness of protective measures during these activities.

Canada’s first animal welfare organization, the Montreal SPCA was founded in 1869 and worked in its early years primarily to improve the living conditions of horses, who were then very present in Montréal and many industries

This is all the more reason that the Montreal SPCA is delighted for Cheval Québec to mandate the SPCA’s animal protection officers to handle complaints and reports of cruelty to horses during their events.

The Quebec Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Food (MAPAQ) will continue to receive complaints of neglect. However, if people have any concerns about potential animal cruelty, they can contact the Montreal SPCA directly and its Investigations Division will evaluate each case carefully to ensure appropriate action is taken to protect the horses. Reported acts will be examined according to nature, severity and the circumstances in which they were committed.

“Working closely with Cheval Québec will help us intervene more quickly and appropriately across the province in cases of cruelty to horses.” says Alain Tessier, Director of the Investigations Division for the Montreal SPCA.
