The SPCA invites everyone to a Silent Vigil for Victims of the Fur Trade this Saturday

Montreal, November 14, 2012 – Montreal’s SPCA invites everyone to a silent vigil for victims of the fur trade that will take place this Saturday, November 17, 2012, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at the Esplanade of the Place des Arts, on St-Catherine street in Montreal.

This event is organized by the Fur-Bearer Defenders and is part of their “Fur Trim Is A Trap” Winter 2012 Campaign. The vigil is a tribute to the animals who have lost their lives at the hands of the fur trade, either as sought after animals, or as “non-targeted” animals who were accidentally caught in traps (birds, endangered species, dogs and cats). We invite everyone to assemble and honor their memory by publicly standing against fur. You will find all the details of the vigil on the Facebook event page by clicking here.

Since 1990, Montreal’s SPCA has a policy position against the killing or raising of animals for fur. Each year, the fur industry exploits millions of fur bearing anima

ls, all in the name of fashion. Animals trapped for their fur are caught in traps and typically die cruel deaths, often breaking bones and teeth or chewing off their own limbs trying to escape from the traps, others die due to dehydration or starvation. Animals raised in fur farms live in small cramped caged where they eat, sleep, urinate and defecate. These animals are killed by electrocution, gas chamber, or breaking of their neck or spine or worse.

The SPCA is asking the public to think about what choices they make when purchasing a winter jacket or coat. We have worked with and continue to support the incredible work of the Fur Bearer Defenders, which is very consistent with the SPCA’s philosophy.
