Last week, the Montreal SPCA welcomed some very special residents: 31 ducklings under the age of 2 months who were rescued by the police (SPVM), having been found in a deplorable condition. The young ducks, who were destined for human consumption, were brought to our shelter where they immediately received care from the SPCA’s veterinary team.
Though several of them seemed weak upon their arrival, all have survived thanks to the good care provided by our various teams. Within five days, they even grew and put on some weight! Volunteers and staff from the Animal Care Department continue to work very hard to ensure their comfort. The little ducklings live under a heating lamp while their down feathers grow in and they have access to water for baths. Dominique, a SPCA employee who has been caring for animals in the shelter for nearly 30 years, feeds them daily. Very soon, they will be able to live a natural duck’s life in an animal sanctuary.
These ducklings are very cute, but that is not the reason why they have been saved. All animals, whether beautiful or not, regardless of species, deserve respect and dignity. The real beauty in all this is a life free of suffering for these 31 little ones!
